Xena (1994-2008)

We (mom and dad) took Xena to the vet today at 5 p.m. She has gone on to better places where she can chase rabbits.
-Mom

Xina adopted us when I was in high school. Her mother was a neighbor’s dog, that was looking for food and ended up in our barn in the dead of winter. We captured the puppies and took them back to the neighbor. A couple of days later the bitch and puppies were back and we we captured them again, except for Xena she was too scarred to come out from under the wood pile. We took the other dogs back, where the puppies were locked in a shed by the neighbor and they froze/starved.

We kept Xena, she was always shy and scared of most people even as a puppy. She lay by our older dog Jet when he was sick and she saved our cat, Mary, and her kittens when she was giving birth and another cat was pestering her.

She liked to go on walks with dad, up and down the two miles that he walks in the morning. She was the ultimate scavenger and hunter. She would bring all sort of carrion to the front yard. She would hide in my parents room when people came in the house. She would come out for special people and children.

This summer she was diagnosed with Chushing’s Disease when she could no longer hold her bladder. She was gated off in the kitchen, which she would stay in at night and dad would mop in the morning. She went from a vibrant and energetic this spring, to not being able to get up off the kitchen floor this weekend, when my mom bumped into her and knocked her over.

So my parents made the decision this weekend to put her down.

It’s really sad.

Scootering

When all of the cousins were at the house they went scootering.

Here are those pictures.

Ewan wanted to listen to my iPod when we were packing for the camping trip, so I took a few pictures of him listening to On the Media and watching Super Why.

Cherry Pie

I made a cherry pie a couple of weeks ago for the first time.  I used a crust recipe from Cooks Illustrated that I found on smittenkitchen.com.   It was not too difficult to follow, though figuring out how to maneuver the crust out was much easier than when I rolled it out on some plastic wrap.

The cherry’s were from Ron’s house and Maryann picked and pitted them.  I cooked the cherries down, drained some of the excess juice and added some sugar to sweeten them up a little bit.  For my first pie it turned out pretty good, though I cooked the cherries down a little bit too much as I like a little juicer pie.

Labor Day Camping

Sue, Ewan, and I headed a half hour north and camped at Alum Creek State Park. We ate some marshmallows, played in the sand and lake, got bitten by mosquitoes, and ate some more marshmallows.

We left on Friday and set up camp, headed to the playground, got to pet a hissing cockroach in the nature center.  We went outside to catch some bugs.  I caught a couple of spiders and a cricket of some sort that we fed to an Assassin Bug.  Ewan caught a few rocks, and Sue caught a little green bug.

On Saturday, I drove back south and went to the OSU vs YSU game with Mike, and Sue and Ewan went to the beach for the day.  Sunday was the accident of the week, with Ewan reaching across the bug candle and burning a little “O” on to his wrist.  We spent most of the day at the beach with Ewan requesting cream to be put on his burn.

Unfortunately we had to head home on Monday so we could unpack and go back to soul sucking work.
